![]() ![]() He has openly stated in the past that he considers the game to be a combination of A Link to the Past and Diablo, two classic games that are close to the heart of many.īear in mind that even with these comparisons, Hyper Light Drifter is not a carbon copy and it doesn’t promise to give you the same feelings or vibes any previous game might’ve brought to you. The game is commonly compared to a more mainstream game title, “Zelda: A Link to the Past”, and the comparison is openly accepted by Alex Preston, the game’s lead developer. In short, the game is simply not guaranteed to be up to everyone’s alley. However, even with the fierce greatness that Hyper Light Drifter possesses it should be noted that no game is admired by the whole population. Cheap tactics, smart executions, or a session of panicking and button smashing – choose your path, traveller. The caped protagonist can only offer a few abilities at your disposal, a dash for dodging, a powerful swing of his sword, and a gun that can be reloaded by scoring melee hits with his sword. How you will eliminate these bloodthirsty foes is up for you to decide once more. The challenge doesn’t quite end there as another question of “how” presents itself. Each of the four areas is a confusing combination of maze-like paths that are plagued with scores of enemies and mobs. Later on, an objective will make itself clear, however, how you will finish this objective or obtain what is needed to complete your quest, is entirely up to you to discover. You are given the complete freedom of choosing where you want to go between the four areas which are unique to one another. Talking to NPCs will not provide you with any easy hints or dialogue, everything is told through pictures or the fictional language used by the lore of the game. The story is strictly linear, nevertheless, the game doesn’t hold your hand or instruct you where to go. Merely equipped with the knowledge of controls and a vague plot, the game concludes that you’re good to go. This can be first seen after the opening sequence is finished, you are dropped off in the middle of nowhere – or maybe it is somewhere either way, the game doesn’t bless you with the privilege of knowing where exactly. When it comes to the gameplay, it is understandably a bit confusing and frustrating at times. Somehow, despite the clash of these qualities, they strangely complement each other in the best way possible. The audio paired with the visuals sets a solemn and peaceful mood that is a stark contrast to the intense battles and boss fights the game throws you into. Immersion is one of the factors that make Hyper Light Drifter stand out from the rest of the myriads of 16-bit and 8-bit games that have been released these recent years. You simply have to experience everything for yourself. No stills or screenshots of the game could ever capture the remarkable graphics of the game or do it justice. The world our red-caped protagonist resides in is truly ethereal and the limitations pixel art itself presents is seemingly nonexistent to the artists of Heart Machine. The way the story is told feels even more magical because of the visuals Hyper Light Drifter provides it will captivate your heart and fill you to the brim with amazement. Once everything clicks in, you would be left in awe. What is guaranteed, however, is the stellar storytelling Heart Machine has crafted. There is no guarantee when you’ll stop thinking “what?” and start saying “oh” while playing the game, it could be at the beginning, mid-way or near the end. The immediate spring to action works very well for the game’s story and how it progresses later on. After the sequence, the protagonist is immediately thrown straight into the adventure and you would have to navigate on your own. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t elaborate or say anymore. Although not in a tone that questions absurdity, rather it leaves you in pure curiosity, eager to see more. It, more or less, leaves you hanging and thinking “what?” to yourself. From its quirky graphics and unconventional color palette to the abstract introduction of the story. The opening sequence showcases a glimpse of the incredible style and atmosphere the game carries. Though described as difficult, it’s well worth tackling the hurdles one after another to experience the captivating masterpiece Hyper Light Drifter is. Anyone who plans to get their hands on this game should be prepared to sink in hours of spare time as well as prepare for a world of hurt and an abundance of sighs. “Challenging” would certainly be one way to describe the entirety of Hyper Light Drifter.
